Dwarf fortress bridge direction1/17/2024 ![]() ![]() It is the shortest route into the fortress only for a building destroyer, thus the trolls path that way and the main goblin siege paths into the death corridor. In my most recent fort I have a separate 3rd entrance I set up to take care of trolls using dragon fire since they only drop FPS destroying trash and corpses I would rather just disintegrate. They happily charge to their doom taking the short path every time. I have a long snaking 3 tile wide corridor that mirrors the short route through the catwalk traps that allows the wagons to enter but enemies won't path down it because its so damn long compared to the corridor of death. Between the outside world and my interior draw bridge is a gauntlet of death nothing has ever crossed alive which consists of a trapped catwalk over a deep pit on both sides with fortifcations overlooking it. ![]() I figure there is no need to risk endangering any of my dwarves or guests by leaving them out in the rain for the goblins to shoot at. It is the first thing one sees after passing through the gauntlet of static defenses and the final interior draw bridge. And if you dig the tunnel mostly in the soil layer, it's not much work, just a few blocks and 2 mechanisms (you also need 3 extra mechanisms for the lever and connections, but you get those back when you de-construct the lever) Such a perfect method is a bit of an exploit but if you want to focus on other things. It is very rare for anything else to appear in the secure tunnel, once I had immigrants choose that point to appear (good choice by them), I'm not sure if it's even possible for sieges to appear, because I think they span about 5 tiles of the map edge, but in any case the wagons are now virtually immune to harassment. Now wagons (not those stinky wagonless elves, but who cares) will appear at the only place which has wagon access - inside the secure tunnel. Build the depot, and use D to check that the map edge is accessible. Now you have a secure corridor from the map edge into your fortress. So bridge in both sides of the last 5 tiles, raise the bridges, and roof over it if you like. Now, you can't build a wall up to the side of the map, but you CAN build a long raising bridge, then raise it ("bridge walls"). You need to dig/build a 3-wide tunnel to the side of the map (use ramps if you want to change z-levels). If you want the final solution to trader security - so perfect that the only way the traders will come to harm is if your forterss is overrun by enemies, here is how: ![]()
